A Political Dismay for a 50 year Government

I guess all the rush for me on the 8th of March
08 did pay off. I did my rights as a Malaysian citizen for the first time in my
life. I voted, and I voted right. Went back to Ipoh in the evening of the 7th,
voted on the 8th and got back to KL on the 8th itself to
attend a function back in my University. As the function was going on, there
were so much hype and tension among us students on the results of the 12th
General Election of Malaysia. SMS and calls were coming in and going out off
the hall where the function was held…. and at about 9.30pm, we received
enormous news. Sungai Siput seat, where the ever strong, proud and superior candidate
who has been in power over that seat for 30 or so years lost his ground. That
was the biggest ever news. I did not want to trust the source who delivered the
news, so I contacted my brother to double check. He replied no and that won’t
happen. At 10.15pm I got another SMS from my brother, “Dato lost.” Now this
source I can trust. I was hysterical and so were all the others in the hall. We were shocked!!! Many
said, that will never happen, many actually laughed when rumors were spread
about this even before polling day, but many also did laugh sinisterly when man
was told we could fly one day and that man would land in moon one day. The
truth is, he lost. My father was very saddened by the news due to the fact that
he claims now that there would be no voice for Indians anymore. His despair was
fair enough, but what happened to the person who voiced out for the Indians
regarding the ratio of medical lecturers and its students in Russia? What
happened to the person who first spoke unruly about the Indians taking their
demonstration to the streets on 25th November 07, and then a sudden
U-turn by speaking on behalf of them in parliament? What happened? I don’t
know. Do you? Well, if you ask me, I would say what had happened on the 8th
was for the good. Yes, the previous candidates that the people voted for did do good for the Indians and yes as a human, nothing is ever enough and we will never be satisfied with what we have. That is why we will always complain that the previous leaders did not do enough. However, do you really think that for the past 50 years since independence, the Indians have reached the level that is to be reached?? Ok lets leave the 50 years time frame. That is for the whole lot of Malaysians. Lets narrow the focus on Indians. 30 odd years by a single governance and where are we?? Still striving for a place in a local university. Still having problems in business equity. Still our crime rate are the highest. Isn’t 30 odd years enough to show that Indians can make it among the elite? Yes they are people who made it to the elite, but the ratio compared to other races are still very low. If we keep the scare and threat among us that the superior governance of 30 odd years are to be toppled and something negative would happen then the change is not going to be implemented. Give it a try and see what are the changes. That is why we need to make a difference and we did just that. Lets hope what had happened is for the good.

Let me give a re-cap of the results. I’m sure everyone knows
this already, but this is my damn blog so just stop whining and read.

Thus, from there we see that in 2004 polling, there were 11 representatives in Parliament. Comparing 2004 to 2008, we now have a total of 13 representatives. Its not a large difference, but there is an increase of 2. However, the difference is that instead of an Ruling Party Coalition making the majority of Indians, it now the Opposition Party. So how do we know that the current Indian representatives are not as the same as the ones before? Will the petrol price go down or at least stay as it is? Will the price of other goods rise? Will the living status of the people enhance? Will all these promises be kept? I would say new broom sweeps clean. Most representatives now are new faces and younger ones too. I mean not compare to me but compared to the ones they beat. Since they are new, they will and must fight for the rights, and I have sincere faith that they will do just that. In the event they don’t, we can always kick them out and vote for another in the 13th GE.

Everyone is talking about the 8th March 2008. It was a historical day for my country. Denial of 2/3 majority in Parliament which if possessed, can amend the Constitution, 5 states ruled by Opposition Parties, big names going down, simple win by the ruling party etc etc etc. The part where amending Constitutions is concerned, The Constitution or rather the PERLEMBAGAAN is the highest rule in a country. Even higher than the monarchy. Its like the Bible for the Christians, the Al-Quran for the Muslims and the Vedas for the Hindus. Its not as sacred as those holy books, but it does have its importance. I do not have the exact figure but we in Malaysia have amended it more than 100 times, where independence reached were not older than 50 years. Thats like shaving your facial hair according to your interest of style. This has been going on because of the 2/3rd majority in Parliament. Now this cannot be done. As for now our constitution is safe. But for how long, only we can decide because we decided this term and we gave a warning to treat us well from now on.

Lets keep our fingers crossed, 5 years time I hope there will be a difference. In fact I’m confident that there will be a difference. Not much, but a little at least
